“We are liquidating the earth’s natural assets to fuel our consumption.”

In World on the Edge, Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute, writes

“The world’s ever-growing herds of cattle, sheep, and goats are converting vast stretches of grassland to desert. Forests are shrinking by 13 million acres per year as we clear land for agriculture and cut trees for lumber and paper. Four fifths of oceanic fisheries are being fished at capacity or overfished and headed for collapse. In system after system, demand is overshooting supply.”
Lester Brown Chapter 1 On the Edge

Human expansion into the environment for shelter, food, and fuel, exacerbated by the sprawl around cities, is squeezing wildlife into the last remaining islands of shrinking habitat.

What is at stake?

In 1979, 1.2 million elephants roamed the African continent. That number currently is 300,000 elephants. We have lost 75% of the elephant herds mainly due to poaching, loss of habitat and human conflict.

The last two hundred in Virunga National Park are victims of resource wars and poaching for food and retail.
North America inexplicably began losing bee colonies. Chemicals in the water supply cause small amphibians to show mutations. A giant Garbage Patch in the Pacific floats unnoticed by humans, but putting plastics into the DNA of birds.

Birds fill up on plastic, then starve to death.

The list is long and depressing.

This conflict that threatens the futures of both wildlife and humans has a solution – with abundant cold fusion energy technology.

Growing food locally and sustainably is economically viable using cold fusion energy.

The first commercial device of this revolutionary technology is essentially a steam generator, which could provide affordable clean water, as well as hot water and heat, off-grid in the remotest locations to support agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, and domestic needs.

Designed to run on hydrogen and a recyclable nickel powder, only one gram of nickel can provide 10 kilowatts of thermal energy from a small portable unit, recharging in about six-months.

Agriculture, horticulture, and aquaculture all benefit from clean water, and hot water.

Even in cold climates, steam generators can heat greenhouses for organic food all year long.

With plentiful energy, it becomes economically viable to recycle all waste, reducing the need for more virgin resources, and no more plastic into the environment!

With clean and abundant cold fusion energy, we can stop the pollution from fossil fuels and the end resource wars limited supplies engender.

Carbon-burning steam power revolutionized farming in the 19th century. Nickel-Hydrogen Exothermic Reaction steam power can revolutionize world agriculture in the 21rst century.

In the ancient Mediterranean villages where philosophy and science began, problems associated with increasing population in were taken care of by shipping off a portion of the tribe to a new location, sometimes forcefully, and founding a new colony.

21rst century humans do not have that same opportunity. There is no ‘Unknown’ area on Earth to expand into. Moon base 2020? Not likely without cold fusion energy.

Where else can humans go?

On Earth, there is only what we choose to program as Nature. ‘Nature’ can only be a work of Art with the participation of All.

Why should we care about the wildlife of this world?

One of the first philosophers in the Greek world was Empedocles. He lived around 450BC and came from the island of Sicily. In one of his surviving fragments of writing, he relates to his student Pausanias the importance of listening carefully to the words his teacher Empedocles is saying.

And why is listening to the teacher Empedocles’ words so important?

“If you press them down
underneath your dense-packed diaphragm
and oversee them with good will and with
pure attention to the work, they will all
without the slightest exception stay with you
for as long as you live. And, from them,
you will come to possess many other things.
For they grow, each according to its
own inner disposition, in whatever way their
nature dictates.
But if you reach out instead after
other kinds of things – after the ten thousand
worthless things that exist among humans,
blunting their cares – then you can be sure
they will only too gladly leave you with the
circling of time, longing to return to their
own dear kind. For you need to know that
everything has intelligence and a share
of awareness.”

Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute advocates changing lightbulbs to compact fluorescent and implementing design changes in current architectural models as a partial, and incremental, solution to the energy fix we’re in. He does not yet realize the potential of the cold fusion future.

However, he has provided a valuable service in exposing the fossil fuels lobbying efforts that help to mold policy away from conventional alternative energies, not to mentions clean cold fusion energy. Mr. Brown’s recent analysis of International Energy Agency data revealed that worldwide, “direct fossil fuel subsidies added up to roughly $500 billion in 2010.”

The IEA’s World Energy Outlook Executive Summary released last November stated “Subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption of fossil fuels jumped to over $400 billion.” And additional $100 billion is funneled to the production-side.

Why all the subsidies when demand is so high?

According to The Center for Responsive Politics‘ website Open Secrets, oil, gas and electric utilities in the US spent $2.3 billion lobbying their government legislators to support their industry since 1998.

The top US spenders on lobbying government legislators for support of industry-friendly policy actions include these companies:

Company

US$ spent lobbying government

General Electric

$257,590,000

Exon Mobile

$166,722,742

Edison Electric Institute

$156,585,999

General Motors

$123,679,170

PG&E

$119,580,000

Data from Center for Responsive Politics

And what does that lobbying get?

Legislation favorable to the industry, and subsidies.

Altogether, worldwide governments gave an average $1.5 billion US a day subsidizing fossil fuel industries. And scrapping fossil fuel subsidies would “avoid 2.56 gigatons of carbon-dioxide per year by 2035 – that “could provide almost half of the extra cuts the world needs to stay within its carbon budget” as reported by the Washington Post.

Conventional alternative energy, whose financial lobbying is puny compared to fossil fuel industry, is increasing its support for Washington DC politics. In response, the World Energy Outlook claims “The share of non-hydro renewables in power generation increases from 3% in 2009 to 15% in 2035, underpinned by annual subsidies to renewables that rise almost five-times to $180 billion.”

In an early Ca$h Flow interview with James Martinez, David J. Nagel described a 5-year program to fund cold fusion research; starting at $20 million a year, and ramping up to $40 million annually, a pittance compared to the subsidies for fossil fuels.

An average of $30 million a year for five years to bring cold fusion research to the next phase, and more importantly, as Professor Nagel describes, bring a young group of scientists into this field of research to continue to innovate and drive the next-generation energy for our planet.

The IEA has not taken into a account the new energy technology based on cold fusion, and therefore, their forecast is lacking.

What is not lacking is the scenario of dire consequences should we continue to fund dangerous energy choices, and ignore the solution of ultra-clean and abundant cold fusion energy.

An old Architectural Record from December 1925, with no cover but otherwise in tact, contained eight advertisements for hot water boilers and a lone oil heater for domestic use in the US.

It’s amazing that, despite the technological advances, some things will never change. Hot water and steam are beloved by humans.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1 Holy Bible

The name cold fusion describes the biggest technological advance in energy since humans tamed fire. It also continues to generate intense emotional responses, both positive and negative.

Such is the Power of Word.

Dr. Michael McKubre outlined some of the names used to describe cold fusion.

In his presentation at Cafe Scientifique, Dr. Michael McKubre discussed the various names that have been given to the Fleischmann-Pons Effect of excess heat, as well as the myriad of subsequent phenomenon since discovered that confirm nuclear reactions when hydrogen infuses certain types of metals.

In this presentation slide below, he notes the vocabulary characterizing various aspects of condensed matter nuclear science.

Names trace the slow awareness of the mechanics of cold fusion reactions.

Dr. McKubre described a few of the terms during the introduction of the lecture.

“All of these terms in red are used to describe what was announced on March 1989 as cold fusion. The term cold fusion actually came from previous work in hot fusion – muon catalyzed hot fusion.

The term stuck, it’s unfortunate, it irritated the physicists. I think the physicists would have been irritated anyway, but this didn’t help.

In attempts to soften the blow we’ve called it low energy nuclear reactions or lattice assisted nuclear reactions – LENR/LANR. Those terms are not very good. Low is subjective and pejorative – you know we don’t really want to produce low energy.

And nuclear is always a bad word. We took the nuclear out of nuclear magnetic resonance and called it magnetic resonance imaging because sociologically, nuclear is not a good term.

Chemically assisted nuclear reactions. A whole slew of things.

The Japanese rather coyly called it new hydrogen energy which really conceals a wealth under that phrase.

If we’re talking about the Fleischmann-Pons Effect, the effect that Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons announced to the world on March 23 which was the electrolytic production of excess energy from a cell containing heavy water D20 and a palladium cathode, then the Fleischmann-Pons Effect is an accurate descriptor.

But the field has expanded vastly beyond that, and we now have an overall terminology condensed matter nuclear science attempting to distinguish what we do from what physicists do with high-energy particles or high-temperature plasmas.”

Each name expresses a particular aspect of a highly elusive process that has defied explanation for more than two decades. As long as there is no definitive theory and scientists are still not sure how this special excess heat effect is initiated, or what the Nuclear Active Environment really is, there will be no definitive name.

The element Helium is correlated with excess heat from the consumption of the hydrogen isotope Deuterium.

One reason the moniker ‘cold fusion’ has “stuck” is that, as the Palladium-Deuterium Pd-D systems have shown, deuterium in can give rise to measurements of Helium out.

In this slide from Dr. McKubre’s presentation, we see excess heat is positively correlated with the production of Helium. The slope of the line represents the rate of change of energy per helium measured and is close to 31 MeV, +/- the error.

Assuming two deuterium nuclei pair up to form a helium nuclei, the measure of the heat generated, or Q-value, would be 24 MeV. Dr. McKubre believes that the observed higher bias may be due to experimental design elements, and that a value closer to the expected 24 MeV Q-value is possible.

These models are based on last century's hot fusion theory of nuclear reactions and do not occur the same way in cold fusion. High-energy particles and dangerous radiation, by-products of hot fusion, are not seen in cold fusion.

In Pd-D systems, two deuterium nuclei are somehow ending up to form a Helium nuclei, which is the essence of fusion, but not fusion as we know it now.

That can’t be all that’s going on either, for the excess heat effect is also generated from Nickel-Hydrogen Ni-H systems, which do not use a fuel of deuterium, but the simplest form of hydrogen, protium.

And because elements not originally present in a cell can be created during the process, there is also a transmutation effect, which could be from either fusion or fission inside the atomic matrix, or, some other new nuclear process.

For these outcomes to occur in different systems, creating multiple different effects, implies nuclear reactions occurring beyond conventionally known theories from 20th century physics.

Nevertheless, the name cold fusion reflects this idea of fusion occurring in “cold” circumstances, i.e. not hot plasmas.

“The future of the future is the present.”
Marshall McLuhan

In ancient times, before science, words were magic. Uttering a name gave power and dominion over that thing. Saying a word could bring whole universes into existence.

It will be remembered that Thoth is called the “scribe of the gods,” the “lord of writing,” the “master of papyrus,” the maker of the palette and the ink jar,” the “lord of divine words,” i.e., the holy writings or scriptures, and as he was the lord of books and master of the power of speech, he was considered to be the possessor of all knowledge both human and divine.

Ancient Egyptian god Thoth was a master of words of power.

At the creation of the world it was he who reduced to words the will of the unseen and unknown creative Power, and who uttered them in such ways that the universe came into being, and it was he who proved himself by the exercise of his knowledge to be the protector and friend of Osiris, and of Isis, and of their son Horus. From the evidence of the texts we know that it was not by physical might that Thoth helped these three gods, but by giving them words of power and instructing them how to use them.
E. Wallis Budge Egyptian Magic 1901

What we choose to call this transformational new energy technology will continue to evolve, until the secret formula is unlocked. In an instant, the simple, clear, perfect vision of our clean energy future will be summoned by a new and powerful Name. Scientists in every basement lab and every DOE office will be able to relax for a bit, and then get down to the hard work of implementing a revolution across the globe.

But the kids won’t care. They make up their own names. Change nouns to verbs, verbs to nouns, mess up the plural, create their own magic.

For this year, we’ll stick with Cold Fusion Now, not just cause we mean it, because it fits – and the kids dig it too!

This cartoon from Droidmatters is targeted toward Information Technology, but informs in an easy way some issues with the US Patent and Trademark Office:

From The Spoilsman: How Congress Corrupted Patent Reform by Zach Carter published on Huffington Post back in October.

“Many people are still looking for work or looking for a job that pays more,” Obama said to a scrum of reporters. “There are more steps that we can take right now that would help businesses create jobs here in America.”

The first item on Obama’s list of immediate, job-creating congressional actions was the passage of patent reform legislation.

“Right now, Congress can send me a bill that would make it easier for entrepreneurs to patent a new product or idea, because we can’t give innovators in other countries a big leg up when it comes to opening new businesses and creating new jobs,” he said.

Besides the fact that the US Patent and Trademark Office re-routes cold fusion/LENR related applications, what else is the problem?

Trolls file hundreds of lawsuits a year over “low quality” patents — lobbyist legal jargon for the questionable or downright bizarre patents routinely granted by the understaffed Patent and Trademark Office. In recent years, patents have been approved for products including a wheeled flower pot (patent No. 7,908,942), the crustless peanut butter and jelly sandwich (patent No. 6,004,596), a decorative box that can be placed in a casket (No. 7,908,942) and an accounting scheme that helps people dodge taxes by moving stock options around (No. 6,567,790). Once approved by the patent office, it’s difficult and costly to overturn the patent in courts, which grant significant deference to the office’s decisions.

What does the newly enacted patent reform mean for innovators?

Here’s one view from Paul Morgan from Patently O 2011 Recap: The Practically Important Elements of the America Invents Act of 2011.

Another view comes from Eric Savitz at Forbes US Inventors: Take Heed of the Revised US Patent Law.

Cold Fusion Now is still on the road, currently in the incredible city of New York, sitting in the beautiful Waldorf Astoria lobby!

But, Mr. Moho asked, and so here it is: what I flash-transcribed from the recent Andrea Rossi interview with James Martinez on Ca$h Flow – albeit in a loose, short note form.

Andrea Rossi speaks with Massachusetts State Legislators about manufacturing E-Cats.

In the beginning of the interview, James mentioned Nikola Tesla as one of the greatest inventors that ever lived, and introduced Mr. Rossi similarly for his revolutionary technology.

When James asked about the pressure on him and his team to produce a good product, Mr. Rossi replied “What you call pressure, I translate as responsibility.”

“This is why we are working without limits of time to achieve the targets that we wanted to reach in due time. Absolutely, yes, we feel the responsibility. But this feeling of responsibility is also a source of energy to make our work and to overcome the stakes we have to pass through everyday.”

Mr. Rossi gets a lot mail from all over the world and responds “very fast”, dedicating 2-3 hours each day to answering inquiries, because he “can learn a lot from this”.

James believes the entire planet will benefit from this technology saying “We are at a great new time in the world, right now”, and “this is some of the best news for the entire world.” He wanted to give Mr. Rossi a chance to reiterate how safe and clean this new energy technology is:

“The planet will benefit immensely. Eventually, we won’t have the pollution and problems we’ve had from nuclear energy ever again.

We do not use toxic material, we do not use radioactive material, we do not produce radioactive material, and in the thousands of tests that we have made with specialists from the University of Bologna, we never have found any emission of radiation. We have no emission of smoke, no emission of waste of any kind, we have no CO2 emissions, no noise emissions and no liquid emissions.”

James asked: Is it easier to integrate your technology in a developing country, or, do you think it is easier to do it in a more “modern” venue like the United States?

“This is a very good question. There are pros and cons in either case. Because, of course, in a developing country, the pro is that there is less resistance, because you have a blank paper to write upon. In this sense, there is a pro. But the con is that there is less “???” preparation to accept a very new thing.

The contrary is in the developed countries… I can say this, I have an extreme high level interest for this technology in countries like USA, North America, and Europe mainly. Of course, also interest in other areas, but less intense.

Your question is very good, and I am not sure I’m able to answer. In the beginning we will diffuse our work better in developed countries, but would be delighted to go wherever we will be called, absolutely.”

When James asked which countries will have access to the technology first, Mr. Rossi replied they were organizing a network around the world, but the “first point of development and the main center of production will be in the United States.”

On the topic of implementation, James asked whether he had met any resistance from power companies.

“I think that all the energy sources will be integrated. I do not think that we will displace other energy sources. I think that we will reinforce the energy network of the world.

Maybe other sources will be employed in the fields where they are more “???”. I think that we can be integrated in the global energy system. Of course there will be some competition, and this will be better for the public.”

Looking forward, James asked if this technology would be able to be used in an automobile. Mr. Rossi replied that it was a difficult question to answer right now, but he thought that ships and trains would most likely be an easier application.

“To be applied to an automobile, I think yes, but the application of this kind of energy to the cars or trucks will need not less than 10-15 years because there are very big problems to be resolved
with electricity.”

Asked if he was using an E-Cat in his own home, Mr. Rossi said:

“Yes. Yes, because it’s a test. Of course yes, I am using it. This is important. There are some that are working in some houses of my team and I and we have to collect all the data and analyze all the problems. They are our guinea pigs.”

Not afraid to enter a specialty that kills careers, Mr. Rossi says, “To work in this field you have to be absolutely non-reactive towards controversy.”

The reason he had success, out of thousands of attempts, was because “we did not lose our time in controversy. We just let everybody say what they wanted.”

James Martinez interviewed Andrea A. Rossi on his Ca$h Flow show this past Thursday, December 29. You can download an .mp3 of the hour-long conversation directly from Cold Fusion Now here, or, go to the Achieve Radio Ca$h Flow archives here.

James has conducted interviews with a long list of new-energy researchers and presented to the public a catalog of scientist’s voices in their own words which you can access from the Cold Fusion Now audio page. In the recent interview with Andrea Rossi, James touched on a number of topics including how Mr. Rossi first got into energy research, the politics of cold fusion and the economics of his new technology.

Paying respect to Drs. Fleischmann and Pons, Mr. Rossi said it was the announcement of their discovery in 1989 that was the “spark that ignited the fire”.

Despite the thousands of early experiments with null results, Mr. Rossi was convinced that he would eventually achieve his goal. “Something like instinct” brought him success.

Along with Sergio Focardi and his team, they focused on the real practical undertaking “to make apparatus’ that work”.

“This is the only thing that counts. I absolutely do not care about all the meaningless noise that surrounds this kind of work.”

Mr. Rossi responded to a question about home units saying distribution to the public of household units is expected to begin “in autumn of 2012” adding that “We are in talks with Home Depot for the diffusion”.

“We have already started the sales of the industrial plants of 1MW, but now focusing on the household, we have to resolve the issue of certifications, and we are working on those, and we are organizing the production.

The target price will be between $1000-$1500 US for an E-Cat with a power between 10-20 kilowatts. Such an E-Cat is able to give the thermal energy and air conditioning for an average family house.

With this price, in a few months the E-Cat is paid back, and the expected life of an E-Cat is around 30 years.”

He believes that his team will be able to start production with one million units “in 2012 with the help of God.”

“Until now we have worked to make the technology. Now we have to make the production. Up to now, we have been able to do all we said that we would have done, and I hope that it will be so for this.”

These first E-Cats “will be made in a way that it will be possible to retro-fit them continuously with all the new arrivals of technology.”

When James asked Mr. Rossi if these home units would be easy to install, he outlined the plans for a network of installation specialists.

“The device has been designed to be very simple to install. It can be installed in parallel with existing heating systems, if they already exist. We will have our network that will go to install but to enrich our network, we will use this system: when anybody will buy an E-Cat we will ask him to communicate to us the address of his contractor who already works to maintain his house.

At that point we will contact immediately his contractor, give him the necessary instructions and send him to make the installation and at that point he also will become, if he wants, a contractor with our network.

This will be the system that we will use. If he will refuse to do this, we’ll send somebody else. But first of all, we will try to enrich and give work to the people that are already in place.”

English is not Mr. Rossi’s first language, and these excerpts are written in the spirit of his meaning. He gave James Martinez a generous interview with alot more exclusive info, but we won’t spoil the listening experience for you!

Download the .mp3 and hear the inventor of the next revolution in clean, abundant, affordable energy in his own words.

“The most important thing that can be learned from the work that we are doing is that we will overcome any critical moment, so in this difficult moment for everybody, if anybody works, believing in what he does, and works with all his efforts, we can build up a new, strong economy.”

In order to understand the technological significance of an invention, it is sometimes better to go back into the past, rather than trying to project into the future. Science fiction is horrible at looking what will happen in the future, with our limited imagination and limited understanding of the present, we are just no good at seeing around the conceptual corners occurring along the path of a new technology. One thing that we are fairly good in seeing, however, is the past histories of well established technologies.

It is familiar ground, and when we look back on it, especially from a new perspective of detachment which can occur when we are beginning to displace that old technology, we can note how different the new is from the old.

Let’s say a new style of paperclip is developed. In order to understand its technological significance, one should understand the difference it presents in functionality or economic productivity, One can ask why paperclips exist at all and how their introduction changed things. In order to understand their significance, for that matter, in order to understand the significance of any invention, it is important to understand what difference it makes. We understand things by comparison and contrast. However, we have an inherent difficulty in conceptualizing the changes when a new technology is introduced. We are in the middle of things, and cannot see clear of them. Going back in time allows us to get clear and see the differences in a before and after situation.

With an established technology, it is hard to understand how much it makes up our way of living. As the fish said, “what’s this ‘wet’ that I keep hearing about?” With a new kind of technology, we are caught up in the novelty and both overestimate it and under estimate it. When the child in us has a brand new hammer, everything starts looking like a nail.

How significant will cold fusion be? Well, we have never had anything like it before. It has the potential to fill the broken promises of nuclear energy, the dealbreaker for fission being the toxic fuel and especially the waste. Cold fusion also promises to be compact, for those of us who feel that there is too much centralization (and control) in our society, the possible plentitude of cold fusion plants hints at a plurality, a diversity of people managing the energy resources, not so much a centralized authority. With a diversity it would longer be ‘one size (mis)fits all.’

Solar offers that kind of diversity of sources, and so does wind and combustion, which after all is just solar turned into managable forms. The whole energy history history of the world, except for nuclear, geothermal, and to some degree, tidal, has been solar in one fashion or another. How far back do you have to go in order to not be relying on solar? (besides the deadend of fission) I think I would look to the undersea vents where life began in the first place.

Most inventions are incremental improvements on other inventions. Cold fusion, on the other hand, when/if it gets going, will not only be quite a jump technologically, but also socially. I include ‘if’ there because the flower is just starting to open, it hasn’t gone into full bloom yet. Or in other words, while we can be quite positive about the potential, we shouldn’t count our chickens just yet.

Cold Fusion Now takes a break for the holidays with family, and it’s great to be home. I am staying in an old Philadelphia row home that has had the same phone number for 81 years!

This lovely Santa’s Workshop display has been on the fireplace mantle since the mid-1940s. No doubt Santa has been down with CF since way back.

There are so many problems in our world; so many disputes and injustice, and we are looking at some pretty hard times next year. But we won’t make it as a species blaming each other for all the wrongs.

I’m challenging myself to choose peace and forgiveness, for my own sake, and for all life on Earth. Will you try it too?

A friend of mine sent me this little story. As I read it, I was reminded how perception is an interpretation of experience.

It’s not easy to get along, but we can if we choose to.

THAT GREEN THING

While checking out, a young cashier suggested to me that I should bring my own grocery bags next time because plastic bags were harmful to the environment. “Sorry,” I retorted, “We didn’t have this green thing back in my day.” “That’s the problem,” responded the clerk. “Your generation didn’t care enough to save our environment for us.” She was right — our generation didn’t have the green thing.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store and they sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled. But we didn’t have the green thing.

We walked up stairs, because there wasn’t an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn’t have the green thing in our day.

Back then we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line using wind and solar power, and our kids got hand-me-downs. But that young lady is right; we didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

Back then we had one TV or radio in the house — not one in every room, and it had a screen the size of a handkerchief, not the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand. When we mailed a fragile item, we used wadded up newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or bubble wrap. We didn’t burn gasoline to cut the lawn; we used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working and didn’t need to run on electrical treadmills. But she’s right; we didn’t have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty. We refilled pens with ink and we replaced razor blades instead of throwing the “disposable” away. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a taxi. We had one electrical outlet per room, and we didn’t need a computerized gadget receiving a signal beamed from a satellite to find the nearest pizza place. But isn’t it sad that the current generation laments how wasteful we were?

Please forward this to other selfish old farts who need a lesson in conservation, but beware — don’t make us mad. We don’t like being old in the first place, so it doesn’t take much to piss us off! by Planet Proctor

The Michigan US Senate race includes over half-a-dozen Republicans vying for Democrat incumbent Debbie Stabenow’s long-held seat, but only one has LENR on their platform.

Former Juvenile Court Judge Randy Hekman states his energy policy on the campaign website www.RandyHekman2012.com:

8. Energy: The simple reality is that our economy depends on energy derived from coal, oil and natural gas to function. Energy exploration – mining and drilling – provide needed jobs and the energy these industries produce keep our economy moving. We need to end the policies that subsidize inefficient sources of energy such as ethanol, wind and geothermal. The best alternative energy program is Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR). We must work to develop this energy program.
Randy Hekman, candidate for US Senate from Michigan

Randy Hekman has a long history of association with LENR science. He formed his own company in 1996 to provide energy research and consultation for LENR.

In 2004, along with Dr. Peter Hagelstein, Dr. Michael McKubre, Dr. Talbot Chubb, and Professor David J. Nagel, Mr. Hekman helped to prepare the report presented at the Department of Energy Review of the field that sought funding for research. The results of that Review, and a critique of the issues related to the Department of Energy and LENR, are compiled by Jed Rothwell here.

Mr. Hekman prefers the term LENR to ‘cold fusion’ saying that though the process is nuclear, it “involves neither fusion nor fission.” In addition,

“Because of its nature, LENR does not require heavy shielding nor does it produce radioactive waste. It offers incredible potential to provide inexpensive and safe energy for our nation, and a boost to our economy.”
Randy Hekman

We sent Mr. Hekman a few questions about his experiences with LENR and here are his responses.

Senate candidate Randy Hekman supports LENR.

Q&A with Candidate Randy Hekman

CFN You are running for the US Senate seat from Michigan and have publicly stated support for LENR science and technology. What is the response when you discuss new energy?

RH I have spoken to many people in our state and elsewhere about LENR over the past 14 years that I have been working full or part time in this field. When I am given a full opportunity to explain how LENR works, I find people are supportive. The ultimate proof, however, will be when people become willing to invest major dollars in the technology. So far, this has eluded us.

CFN You believe that coal, oil and natural gas are still important. What do you see as the role of fossil fuels in the economy?

RH More than 1.7 trillion barrels of crude oil (these are proven reserves) can be found in the 50 states of our nation, plus enormous amounts of natural gas and coal. Until we get LENR on stream, we will need to use these resources to allow our economy to recover from the malaise it is in. But I firmly believe that LENR technology is the means of meeting the world’s energy needs into the future. It is safe, inexpensive, virtually inexhaustible, and causes no environmental damage. In fact, it can be used to convert spent fission fuel into benign elements.

CFN The BP/Horizon oil catastrophe caused damage to both the economy and environment, and the federal response was weak. As a member of Senate, how would you have responded differently?

RH The damage to the environment was significant at the time and costly to remediate, but not for long term. Human beings will at times make mistakes. We must do all in our power to minimize the likelihood and severity of mistakes, but deal with life when mistakes occur and go on. I am not overly put out by the federal government’s response except their reluctance to open up exploration more quickly.

CFN You state that “We need to end the policies that subsidize inefficient sources of energy such as ethanol, wind and geothermal.” Why do you call these sources of energy ‘inefficient’?

RH Without government subsidies, these approaches to alternate energy could not work. Government has a very poor record of picking winners and losers. Let market forces do their thing to bring the winners to the top and losers off the scale. LENR can become a powerhouse because it is good, not because government feeds it with resources.

CFN Why do you call Low Energy Nuclear Reactions LENR the ‘best alternative energy program’?

RH I am totally convinced that LENR is an energy source that is virtually limitless and can be used in small and very large applications safely and durably. I have studied it long enough to become totally convinced it is real and the wave of the future.

CFN In 2004, you were part of a group that presented a survey of the field of condensed matter nuclear science to the Department of Energy in a bid to include LENR science in their energy research funding mix. How would you characterize the outcome?

RH I was a part of that group. I was there when our group made its presentations to the panel of experts. The panel was impressed, as they should have been, with a description of the data supporting LENR experiments. But they were rolling their eyes when our team tried to describe the theories behind the data. We tried to say it was “cold fusion.” I am totally convinced it is neither fusion nor fission, but neutron-catalyzed nuclear reactions utilizing the weak force rather than the strong force.

CFN Recent demonstrations of Andrea A. Rossi’s Energy Catalyzer and announcements of other products planned for release next year by researchers in Greece and Italy have generated alot of excitement from the public, as well as some mainstream press. What changes, if any, have you noticed in the public awareness as these technologies are being developed.

RH I agree there has been growing news on the subject, but I am VERY skeptical of Mr. Rossi’s work, based on his excessive secrecy and his sketchy background. On the other hand, however, more and more legitimate scientists are following with great interest the work of Lewis Larsen and his partner, Allan Widom. I feel they accurately explain this phenomenon.

CFN Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney recently mentioned cold fusion in an interview with the Washington Examiner. What do think brought cold fusion to his attention? Are you aware of any other political candidate who supports condensed matter nuclear science?

RH I’m sorry, but I can’t answer your question about Mitt. And no, I don’t know of others who support it.

CFN What do you see on the new energy front moving forward into 2012?

RH I’m optimistic that we will see great breakthroughs in people’s acceptance and, frankly, we need it!

I finally got my hardcopy of Infinite Energy magazine.

I’m on the road, with mail forwarded here and there, so there was a delay in the November/December issue. Even though selected articles are available on their website for free, there’s nothing like having it in hand to take around.

It’s the 100th issue!

Infinite Energy started back in 1995 by Eugene Mallove, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University graduate in aeronautical engineering and environmental health sciences, respectively. He had a talent for communicating science to the public and wrote several books including “Fire from Ice: Searching for the Truth Behind the Cold Fusion Furor“.

Dr. Mallove was also a chief science writer at MIT’s news office before resigning over their falsification of data from Fleischmann-Pons-style experiments. One of the first passionate advocates of new energy, he wrote a well-documented expose of MIT’s data manipulation in issue #24. From his own words:

In the spring of 1991, as I was finishing Fire from Ice, and feeling increasingly uncomfortable with what was happening at MIT with respect to cold fusion, I made a fateful discovery.

Questions had already arisen about exactly how the MIT PFC-Chemistry Dept. team had analyzed their excess heat calorimetry study that pared a heavy water/palladium cell with an ordinary water/palladium cell. This was the so-called “Phase-II Calorimetry” study that had been published in the Journal of Fusion Energy. (Edited at the MIT Plasma Fusion Center—how’s that for short-circuiting peer review!)

From the pile of information that I had been collecting about the on-going work at MIT and elsewhere, I found two draft documents concerning this calorimetry that had been given to me by PFC team members during the rush toward publication. I could see immediately that there was a serious discrepancy between the unpublished, pre-processed raw data (the July 10, 1989 draft) and the final published data on the July 13, 1989 draft. (See page 11 graphs reproduced from these drafts).

At first glance, it appeared that the data had been altered between July 10th and 13th to conform to what would be most welcome to the hot fusion people—a null result for excess heat in the heavy water data. I would later publicly challenge the creation and handling of these graphs by MIT PFC staff (see extensive Exhibits J through Z-11).
Dr. Eugene Mallove MIT and Cold Fusion: A Special Report IE#24

Infinite Energy issue #1 has Dr. Edmund Storms on the cover.

It was the poor treatment of cold fusion that compelled Dr. Mallove to start Infinite Energy magazine.

The very first issue was partially funded by Arthur C. Clarke who wrote “though the title may be criticized on logical grounds, I can’t really think of a better one.” It also included a letter from Clarke to then Vice-President Al Gore requesting funding for this science.

A strong supporter of cold fusion, Arthur Clarke wrote in a 1998 Science magazine article “Even more controversial than the threat of asteroid impacts is what I would call perhaps one of the greatest scandals in the history of science, the cold fusion caper.”

Arthur C. Clarke contributed several articles over the years including “2001: The Coming Age of Hydrogen Power And the Dawn of a New Era” [read] from issue #22.

That very first issue of Infinite Energy also included an article by Nobel Laureate and quantum field theorist Julian Schwinger “Cold Fusion Theory: A Brief History of Mine“. [read] He was awarded the Nobel prize in 1965 for quantum electrodynamics along with Richard Feynman and Shinichiro Tomonaga, and originated the oft-quoted “The circumstances of cold fusion are not the circumstances of hot fusion.”

Dr. Schwinger later resigned from the American Physical Society APS for their refusal to publish his papers on cold fusion theory, saying “The pressure for conformity is enormous. I have experienced it in editors’ rejection of submitted papers, based on venomous criticism of anonymous referees. The replacement of impartial reviewing by censorship will be the death of science.”

Contributors to issue #1 include names that are familiar to those following cold fusion developments today such as Edmund Storms with his essay “Cold Fusion: From Reasons to Doubt to Reasons to Believe” [read], Jed Rothwell’s “Very Hot Cold Fusion in Japan“, Peter Gluck with “Why Technology First“, and Bruce Klein and Dennis Cravens‘ “Cell Testing at Clean Energy Technologies“.

Pioneers like then Associate Editor Hal Fox, Tom Benson, Geoff Rohde, Andrew Rothovius, Michael T. Huffman, Nelson Ying and Charles W. Shults III contributed articles, original research and reviews.

This T-Shirt from Al Kemme Associates was advertised in Infinite Energy Vol. 1 No. 3 in 1995. I want one!

Looking at the earlier issues reveals a community of researchers and writers fully engaged about the possibilities of clean, abundant energy from hydrogen, and excited too.

Advertised in several early issues is this t-shirt design from Al Kemme Associates. Above the order form you could cut-out and mail was this description:

Cold Fusion Lives! The definitive T-Shirt for the Cold Fusion supporter!
Grinning skull with red and yellow atomic eye sockets is guaranteed to be a hit at a scientific conference or biker convention!

Infinite Energy magazine has profiled the major players in cold fusion/LENR/LANR/ condensed matter nuclear science and published original scientific work shunned by the mainstream “peer-reviewed” journals for seventeen years.

Experimental data and articles on speculative science were published to support independent research. Giving a voice and a platform to new energy scientists around the world, allowing the field to advance – before the Internet allowed global networked communication.

The non-profit New Energy Foundation was formed as an adjunct to the magazine in order to further support independent new energy researchers through direct funding. Donations made to the Foundation are distributed to labs that successfully apply to the Foundation. Your donation can also be earmarked for specific researchers and be assured that they will reach their labs in particular.

The death of founder Eugene Mallove in 2004 was devastating to the tight crew that operates the office. Recent losses of Technical Editor Scott Chubb earlier this year and then his uncle, long-time researcher and author Talbot Chubb, this month have also forced difficult changes.

Infinite Energy issue #100

However, Technical Editors Dr. Peter Graneau and William H. Zebuhr along with Managing Editor Christy L. Frazier have honored their work by continuing to publish cutting-edge new energy science and technology.

Struggling through a difficult economy, the recent 100th issue looks at the state of the science today, surveying scientists working in the field such as Drs. Brian Ahern, Jean-Paul Biberian, Talbot Chubb, William Collis, Dennis Cravens, John Dash, Mitchell Swartz, and Francis Tarzella.

A second status report includes remarks by Thomas Bearden, Arnold Gulko, Donald Hotson, Thomas Phipps, Jr and William Zebuhr with Dr. Cynthia K. Whitney as the lone female respondent.

It includes a review of the first commercial course on cold fusion from NuCat founder David J. Nagel, “A Model for a Sonofusion Process” by Roger Stringham, and a theoretical paper by Scott Chubb “Conventional Physics Can Explain Cold Fusion Excess Heat“.

Infinite Energy provides a critical service for scientists, students, and clean energy activists. They have generously helped our efforts at Cold Fusion Now through magazine and book donations for our educational and outreach events.

Pending PCT patent application by Randall Mills and Black Power Inc. – Part 1

The following is a further posting in a series of articles by David French, a patent attorney with 35 years experience, which will review patents of interest touching on the field of Cold Fusion.

In response to my last posting I was sent a reference to the following PCT patent application: Electrochemical Hydrogen-Catalyst Power System with the suggestion that I might comment on it. That is the subject of this posting.

First, by way of review, a PCT application is a patent application filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty. This is a system for processing applications. It does not produce patents. The PCT system allows a single application to be filed that will cover some 135 countries. The filing remains as an application for a period up to 30 months. After that, national patent filings must be made in individual countries. But the 30 months buys time.

In this case, the application is directed to an invention by Dr Randall L. Mills of Blacklight Power, Inc. of Cranbury, New Jersey. Randall Mills and Blacklight Power have been around for a long time, since at least as early as 1991. Here’s a further commentary on both parties as found in Wikipedia.

This patent application is significant for two reasons that I will address in this post and in a following post. It demonstrates further aspects of the patenting process, and it explores the prospects that the theories of Randall Mills are relevant to the phenomena of Cold Fusion.

Addressing the patent application, it should be appreciated that Randall Mills has a track record of filing for patents. At the US patent office he is listed as having filed 40 applications since 2001. The filings transcend energy issues and address pharmaceuticals and a variety of other inventions. Clearly this person is a prolific inventor.

The immediate PCT application is interesting for several special reasons. This is an application that is still within the PCT system. It has not yet resulted in national filings before individual country patent offices. At the same time, it is based on original American patent applications. In fact, unusually, it is based on some 25 US filings listed under the title: “Priority Data:”. Each of these US applications is “provisional”. This is indicated by the use of the serial number that begins with “61/” (or “60/” in the past).

A Provisional US patent application entitles an applicant to claim the benefit of the priority accorded to its filing date for what is disclosed in the application. This is useful in filing not only later applications in the United States but also in making patent applications in countries around the world. Claiming a priority date gives an applicant an entitlement, a priority, over other inventors that might file for the same thing. It also gives priority over publications that occur after the filing date which might otherwise bar the grant of the patent. A priority filing “shelters” subsequent patent applications from the novelty-barring affects of post-priority date publications.

A priority filing date is only good for one year from the date of the earliest filing made. It must be claimed and proven when national patent applications are filed. A US Provisional application is useful primarily only to establish a priority date. The US Provisional application becomes automatically abandoned after one year. It must be replaced with a final, “Non-Provisional” application. In this case, the PCT application represents such a Non-Provisional US application. It also counts as an application in all participating countries around the world. To complete the procedures, individual “national entry” applications have to be made on exiting the PCT by month 30 or 31 from the earliest priority date.

What is unusual about this PCT filing is that it has so many provisional US applications listed on its cover. Randall Mills and Black Power Inc. have repeatedly filed Provisional applications because, presumably, they are enhancing the story and wish to have credit, a filing date, for each new section that they’re adding to the disclosure. These multiple filings usually reflect the growth of the applicants’ understanding of the invention in the course of its development. More typically, inventors simply file an initial application which is a Provisional, and then follow-up the Provisional with a final Non-Provisional application at the end of the priority year. If an inventor has had no further thoughts on his invention during the priority year, then this is the proper course to follow. Optionally filings can also be commenced directly with a Non-Provisional application.

The fact that so many Provisionals have been filed in this case probably represents both a developing understanding on the part of the inventor and the prospect that the applicant considers the invention to be very important. Multiple priority filings are appropriate if there is a prospect that others may invent something similar. Virtually all countries in the world award patents, in the case of competing applications, on the basis of the party having the earliest filing date.

In respect of this specific PCT application the earliest priority filing was made on July 30, 2010. Preserving the right to claim priority, the PCT application was filed within one year of the 1st priority filing, namely on March 17, 2011. There would not normally be an advantage in filing a PCT application earlier than the end of the priority year. Why this PCT filing was made two thirds of the way through the priority year is unexplained.

The deadline to file in the individual countries is set by the earliest priority date. That deadline is for many countries 30 months and for other countries 31 months after the earliest priority date. That sets the 30 month national entry deadline, which applies to the United States, for this application as January 30, 2012. Accordingly, we can expect that this further invention by Randall Mills will appear on a list of US filed patent applications shortly after January 30, 2012.

Under present circumstances, it is taking on the order of 2 to 3 years before the US examiner will take-up a US patent application and commence examination. That process will begin with an examiner’s search report combined with a commentary by the examiner as to whether the patent disclosure, and particularly the claims, are in order so as to support the grant of a patent. Applicants normally have at least one, or more typically several, opportunities to engage in exchanges with the examiner and make corrections that will allow the examiner to approve the application for issuance is a patent. Conveniently, at the US Patent Office it is possible to monitor this applicant-examiner exchange over the Internet, once it occurs. Following the exchange in this case could prove most interesting.

This concludes the 1st part of this posting. The 2nd part, which will be posted subsequently, will address the relevance of this application to the ColdFusion story. Summarizing shortly, this application purports to teach that electricity can be generated based on the phenomena of the formation of a shrunken hydrogen atom named by Randall Mills as a “hydrino”. Mysteriously, this disclosure makes one short reference to the possibility that the formation of hydrino atoms can contribute to a fusion event. More discussion to follow.

I found this gem comment the other day while doing some background on LENR:

http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/blog/post/2011/05/swedish-skeptics-confirm-nuclear-process-in-tiny-4-7-kw-reactor

“I do not think it is “amazing that the media has not paid more attention to” Rossi. His claims seem astounding. They resemble those of many previous energy scams. Reporters and scientists dismiss Rossi for this reason.

I would dismiss him myself if I did know that hundreds of other researchers have seen similar effects thousands of times. I myself have spent weeks in laboratories watching cold fusion gadgets produce heat. It is boring after a while.

Knowing that the effect has been widely replicated in hundreds of major laboratories puts everything in a different perspective. It makes Rossi far more believable. Believability in experimental physics is predicated on two things: independent replication and a high signal to noise ratio. Cold fusion met these goals back in 1990. There is not a single rational reason to doubt it exists.

The thing is, most reporters and scientists, and people such as Glen Doty know nothing at all about cold fusion. They do not realize it exists. They have not read any papers on the subject. So naturally they say “I’m confident that this is a fraud…” In 1906, three years after Kitty Hawk and one year after the Wrights flew in front a large crowd of leading citizens of Dayton Ohio for 40 minutes, every single newspaper and magazine in the U.S. — especially Scientific American — denounced them as frauds, charlatans and lunatics. Not one of those newspapers bothered to send someone to Dayton to ask the bank president and others if they had really seen a flight.

The editors at Scientific American today are no smarter than their predecessors. They told me they have never read a paper on cold fusion “because reading papers is not our job” but they are sure it is fraud and lunacy. (I uploaded that letter.)

“The real question is not why is the mass media is ignoring Rossi, but why have they ignored the rest of cold fusion for 22 years? My answer: because they are stupid, and incurious.” – JedRothwell, May 4, 2011

This bears repeating: “Knowing that the effect has been widely replicated in hundreds of major laboratories puts everything in a different perspective.”

To drive home the point: Ni+H(heated under pressure)=Cu+lots of heat. This phenomenon (LENR) has been confirmed in hundreds of published scientific papers: http://lenr-canr.org/acrobat/RothwellJtallyofcol.pdf

Here is a PowerPoint presentation by George Miley of the University of Illinois who has successfully replicated the LENR “cold fusion” reaction.

Knowing the LENR exothermic reaction has been widely replicated, you ought to assess how much energy we gain with this new clean energy technology. According to Rossi’s patient one gram of nickel ought to yield the energy equivalent of about 500 kilograms (not tons, which was a mistake) of oil. This means that nickel is about half a million times as energy dense as oil (or about one hundred thousand times as energy dense as diesel fuel) using LENR.

Nickel is about 3% of the mass of the Earth, whereas all fossil fuels combined (even oil sands and methane hydrate) are less than a billionth that amount.

Here is another gem internet comment:

“Ramifications

Scalable: Nuclear energy densities from µW to GW

Portable: Little or no need for radiation shielding

Adaptable to the full range of transportation systems

Does not have the weight, safety, and costs of fission

Revolutionizes Aviation and Access to Space

Decouples energetics from reaction mass

Fuel mass essentially goes away for air-breathing applications, reduces total mass

No GHG (CO2, H2O, aerosols, …) concerns

Fuel is very cheap (Nickel abundant, electrolysis of H2O)

Total replacement of fossil fuels for everything but synthetic organic chemistry” -Sept 22, 2011 LENR Brief @ GRC – J.M.Zawodny 27

Couldn’t have said it better myself. The paradigms are so broken man – maybe we can create paradise on Earth and settle the other planets of our solar system. Frankly, it seems like the main barrier to fast LENR integration is psychological.

The Washington Examiner’s Transcript of our interview with Mitt Romney published here has this mention of cold fusion from the Republican Presidential candidate:

CARNEY: What role should government have in promoting certain industries or economic activities such as homeownership, or manufacturing, renewable energy or fossil fuel energy, exports, or just advanced technology? What sort of subsidies and incentives do you favor? You had some of these in Massachusetts, I know.

ROMNEY: Very limited — my answer to your first question. I’m not an advocate of industrial policy being formed by a government. I do believe in the power of free markets, and when the government removes the extraordinary burdens that it puts on markets, why I think markets are more effective at guiding a prosperous economy than is the government.

So for instance, I would not be investing massive dollars in electric car companies in California. I think Tesla and Fisker are delightful-looking vehicles, but I somehow imagine that Toyota, Nissan, and even General Motors will produce a more cost-effective electric car than either Tesla or Fisker. I think it is bad policy for us to be investing hundreds of millions of dollars in specific companies and specific technologies, and developing those technologies.

I do believe in basic science. I believe in participating in space. I believe in analysis of new sources of energy. I believe in laboratories, looking at ways to conduct electricity with — with cold fusion, if we can come up with it. It was the University of Utah that solved that. We somehow can’t figure out how to duplicate it.

But basic science, in my view, is a way that research can encourage our entire economy. And so, for instance, in Michigan, some years ago — I think it was in 2007 — I spoke there and said, you know, I think we ought to embark upon an effort to do analysis on energy research, transportation research, materials research. But again, basic research which could then be either purchased by or licensed by companies foreign and domestic.

CARNEY: For instance, nuclear power right now is getting loan guarantees under both Bush and Obama policies to help develop nuclear power more rapidly. Is that the sort of thing that you would support?

ROMNEY: My inclination would be to do this: It would be to say that – if we went to the nuclear people and they say that, you know, if you could give us our permits in three years, then we wouldn’t need any help. And so what I might be willing to do is say we will either give you your permits in three years or refund the money to you we’ve invested to build the facility or to reach this point. We will, in effect, give a guarantee that you will not be prevented from developing nuclear power by virtue of government’s malfeasance and ineffectiveness. And so rather than saying, here, we’ll give you a bunch of money to build a nuclear facility, we would instead guarantee certain government action.

In an area, sometimes it’s hard to find the line between research and development. In the area of nuclear research, for instance, there is discussion of an entirely different technology for building very small nuclear plants that use a pebble-type technology, as opposed to the rods that – you’re familiar with this – there’s a discussion about building a model facility to see if that technology actually works. I actually consider that research. It would be owned by the government; perhaps we’d hire companies to build it; and we’d see if it works. And if so, then that technology could be licensed to any number of companies, again, foreign or domestic, to build facilities here and around the world.

That, again, is if we don’t think that there is going to be sufficient interest in that part of industry to carry out research which has a very high-risk of failure and requires a great deal of resources.

It’s election season in the US, and time to demand better from our representatives. Now is the time to be planning your 2012 Campaign for Clean Energy.

How will you contact your political party and inform them of the one solution that’s been missing?
